Our Story

What We Believe

God sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to fulfill the Law we had broken and to suffer the punishment for our sin.

God has given us His Word, the Bible, to lead us to salvation and hope by His promises and a life of thankful obedience by His Law.

God has given Baptism and the Lord's Supper as sacred pictures of what God has done for us in Jesus; and to bring this gospel home to us.

God has promised to make all things new by the second coming of Jesus Christ. All who trust in Him, now, will dwell with God in a heavenly kingdom that will never end. Amen.

Our church is a member of the Evangelical Association. We are in full agreement with its Statement of Faith.

Our History

On the afternoon of September 6, 1953, a group of 95 interested people met in a garage on Old Highway 64, about two miles east of Lexington, to discuss the organization of a new Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Sunday School was organized on September 13, 1953.

The name Memorial Evangelical and Reformed Church was adopted on September 25, 1953; and with the merger of the Congregational Christian Churches in 1957, Memorial became a part of the United Church of Christ. The congregation was officially organized on November 8, 1953 and was enrolled by the Southern Synod in December of 1953 as a self-supporting congregation.

Plans for the Christian Education Building were decided upon soon after the first meeting of the new congregation and the unfinished building was first used for Sunday Church School on December 6, 1953 and morning worship on December 13, 1953. An addition to the building was dedicated on February 23, 1958. A new kitchen was added to the fellowship hall at a later date.

Ground breaking ceremonies for the sanctuary were held on March 13, 1966. The first worship service for "The Formal Opening" of the sanctuary was held on February 19, 1967. A "mortgage-burning service was held on July 19, 1970.

On February 24, 2017, Memorial became Memorial Evangelical and Reformed Church and a member of the Evangelical Association of Reformed and Congregational Christian Churches.
